Salween Restaurant sits on Simpson Street in a quieter, older section of Thunder Bay, offering a straightforward dining spot for anyone craving Thai food without the fuss. The interior is clean and functional rather than trendy, focusing attention on the food and efficient service rather than ambience. This makes it a solid option for a casual dinner or takeout when you want a satisfying meal rather than a night out.

The menu leans towards traditional and accessible Thai dishes, with items like yellow curry with shrimp, mild pad thai with tofu, and ginger salad standing out as popular picks. Portions are generous and priced reasonably, making Salween a practical choice for those looking for comfort food with authentic flavours that don’t overwhelm with heat—something appreciated by diners who prefer a milder experience. Seasonal or adventurous eaters will find their curiosity rewarded by options like Thai sausage or the crispy mini spring rolls, which offer pleasant textural contrasts.

Locals and visitors alike often choose Salween for its consistent delivery of well-balanced dishes that manage to be flavorful without being overpowering. It’s suited for anyone who doesn’t want to venture into overly busy or upscale dining environments but still expects genuine Thai food. The staff’s friendly and efficient approach adds to the simple, no-pressure vibe, making it easier to drop by any day of the week. Whether you’re picking up takeout after work or sitting down for a quick meal, expect steady service and dependable flavours.

While the decor and location might not catch attention, the kitchen’s focus on portion size and taste gives folks a reason to come back. It also appeals to those who like to try a variety of dishes rather than sticking to staples like pad thai, with a few regulars championing the yellow and red curries, as well as some lesser-known stir-fry options.

For anyone passing through Thunder Bay or locals looking for a straightforward meal that’s hearty and mild, Salween offers a grounded spot where the food does the talking, minus any fuss or pretense.

Located in what appears to be a more outdated part of town but the food is still delicious. A bit on the mild side compared to other Thai restaurants which is fine for those who don't like it spicy. Portion sizes are great with very reasonable prices. I would definitely recommend this to any visitors to Thunder Bay.

Super yummy foods! We were going to Toronto and drove by this place. We ordered all five different items on the menu and they were all so good! I would like to suggest to the white folks, get out of your comfort zone and try different menus other than “Pad Thai”. If you want to try one of these menus, you can just show them the following pictures! I’m definitely returning if I’m ever going to drive by Thunder Bay. Satisfaction level is 100%

Dining in today—not here for the ambience, but the staff are nice and it’s very clean. The BEST Thai in TBay. My regular takeout order is the red curry. Big portion and tastes awesome!

Pad See Ew, Yellow Curry, and Kuay Tway slap. They’re amazing. So flavourful. Best dishes at Salween by far. I like these more than their rice dishes and Pad Thai. Will go back to order these dishes for sure.

Salween did it again! Their chicken pad thai was pure comfort on a plate, perfectly balanced, not too sweet, not too spicy, just chef’s kiss. The peanut sauce? Let’s just say if I could bottle it and drink it with a straw, I would. And the spring rolls? Crispy little golden miracles that disappeared faster than my willpower on cheat day. It wasn’t just a meal, it was a full-on party in my mouth… and everyone was invited. Highly recommend if you’re craving food that makes you close your eyes and do a happy dance after every bite.

I only order take out from this restaurant. I love the food. The service is friendly, they always get my order correct. The actual restaurant leaves a lot to be desired but on the plus side I've never seen it busy - except with take out.

Terrific! The food reminded me of one of my faves in Toronto. I got the panang red curry, They swapped meat out for tofu and were not stingey with it. It was a larrrge serving so i'd share with someone next time. The environment isnt "cute" but certainly not bad. It seems like the space mostly caters to take-out so the atmosphere is a bit more of an afterthought. It was clean, and had a funky old vibe.
